The Bill of Costs engine

The arithmetic, done properly.

Every item is costed against the instrument in force on the date the work was done, and the advocate’s standing at the Bar on that same date. Neither of those is today, which is why Bill Wise works it out on the server rather than trusting a spreadsheet.

Change an entry and the profit costs, allowances, general charges and totals all follow. Finalize a Bill and its figures are frozen, so what you filed stays what you filed.

Matters

Every case with its parties, court, dates and the people in your firm who may see it.

Clients

Client records, contacts, and a portal where a client sees their own matters and nothing else.

Documents

Filed against the matter, stored outside the web root, and released only through an access check.

Court diary

Hearings and deadlines, with reminders sent before the date rather than after it.

Disbursements

Expenses recorded as they happen and pulled straight into the Bill as disbursements.

Reports

Firm activity, matters and billing — scoped to what each person is allowed to see.

How it works

Three steps to a filed Bill.

The repetitive work is automated. The professional judgment stays with the advocate.

01

Register your firm

Your firm registers once and is verified before anyone can sign in. Every account belongs to a firm — a sole practitioner registers as a one-person firm.

02

Run your practice

Open matters, add clients, file documents, keep the court diary and record disbursements as the work happens.

03

Draw the Bill

Pull the work into a Bill of Costs, let Bill Wise cost it, review it, then finalize and export it for filing.

The workspace

Everything your firm needs, in one place.

Matters, clients, documents, the court diary and Bills of Costs — one workspace, scoped to your firm.

Security

Your firm’s work belongs to your firm.

Confidentiality is not a setting in Bill Wise. It is how the system is built — and each of these is enforced on every request, not merely hidden from the screen.

Firm isolation

Every record belongs to a firm, and a query that forgets to say which one returns nothing at all.

Record-level access

A matter is visible to the people who opened it or were assigned to it — reports and exports included.

Activity auditing

Who did what, and when, recorded against the firm rather than left to memory.

Protected documents

Files are stored outside the web root and released only through an authorised download.

Questions

Before you begin.

Yes. Every Bill Wise account belongs to a registered law firm — even a sole practitioner registers as a one-person firm. This is what keeps each firm’s clients, cases and Bills separate and accountable, and it is enforced by the system rather than by convention.

No. You can use Bill Wise for the length of the trial without entering payment details. The trial begins once your firm’s registration has been verified.

Only the people who opened it or were assigned to it, together with those whose role covers the whole firm. Access is checked on every request, not just hidden from the screen, and it applies to reports and exports as well.

Yes — on the trial and on any paid plan. The exported Bill of Costs is already formatted and ready for filing, so there is no table to lay out by hand.

No. Bill Wise is a drafting aid: it applies the rates and does the arithmetic, and every entry and legal judgment remains the advocate’s to make and to review. The advocate remains responsible for the Bill as filed.
